Start with capacity
As a rule of thumb, allow around 4–6 cubic feet (roughly 110–170 litres) of fridge space per adult in the household, plus extra if you cook in batches or shop weekly.
A couple is usually well served by a 250–300L fridge, while a family of four is more comfortable at 350–450L.
Pick a layout
Top-freezer models are the most affordable and space-efficient. Double-door (bottom-freezer) units put fresh food at eye level. French-door fridges add width and premium features like water dispensers.
Think about which door swing and freezer position suit your kitchen traffic.
Measure twice
Check the height, width and depth against your alcove — and leave at least 50mm on each side and 100mm at the back for ventilation.

Mind the energy label
An A+++ rated inverter fridge can use 40% less power than an older model, paying back its price difference over its lifetime. Look for the kWh/year figure to compare running costs.
